2026 Day of Remembrance Events: A Recap

Updated: Mar 12

As we close out our 2026 Day of Remembrance events, we want to send a heartfelt thank you to the many people and organizations who made this possible.

We were able to host four events across Idaho to both honor the 2026 Day of Remembrance and to launch our latest publication: Education and Freedom at Minidoka: The Diary of the Superintendent Arthur Kleinkopf. Over 300 people came out to enjoy the presentations, ask questions, and learn more about Minidoka as a whole.

We are excited to share this new publication with Minidoka survivors and descendants, scholars and researchers, educators and students, and the general public, as it provides insight on the experience at Minidoka.

Deepest thanks to the Kleinkopf family for gifting the copyright for their grandfather's diary to the Friends of Minidoka. If you'd like to purchase a copy of Education and Freedom at Minidoka: The Diary of the Superintendent Arthur Kleinkopf, go to our online bookstore.

The publication of Kleinkopf’s diary is part of our larger project, Minidoka Memories: Stories that Connect and Heal, which will collect and highlight stories and oral histories from the Idaho community with ties to Minidoka. If you are interested in sharing your family's story and connection to Minidoka, please email memories@minidoka.org.

We also extend our gratitude to our supporters, including Idaho Humanities Council, Jones Family Fund through National Philanthropic Trust, Duane Minoru Yamamoto Memorial Fund with Friends of Minidoka, Boise Arts and History, Minidoka National Historic Site, Twin Falls Public Library, and Special Archives at Albertsons Library at Bosie State University, and our community partners who hosted these events: Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls Japanese American Citizens League, College of Southern Idaho, The Community Library, and Special Archives at Albertsons Library at Bosie State University.

If you missed the presentations, you can watch the recording of our presentation from The Community Library below.

Thank you to everyone who supports, follows, and shares the Minidoka story. Because of you, we can continue to share the lessons of the past to inform our future.
