A Message from our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Friends of Minidoka’s work is not just about preserving history – it’s about safeguarding the stories, lessons, and legacy that shape our future. Including Friends of Minidoka in your estate plans is one of the most impactful ways to ensure this mission continues for generations to come.

When Roland Ninomiya generously included Friends of Minidoka in his estate plans, his gift empowered us to expand our programs, reach new audiences, and invest in long-term preservation efforts.

By adding us to your will or trust or by naming us as beneficiary to a retirement account, you become a part of this legacy – honoring those who came before us while ensuring that future generations understand the importance of justice and remembrance.

Please join our Legacy Circle and help ensure that Friends of Minidoka can continue to thrive and grow.

Sincerely,

Robyn Achilles

Roland Ninomiya:
His Enduring Legacy

A Message from Erik Ninomiya

In the summer of 1970, our family stopped in a hot, dusty, forgotten spot in Idaho while on a cross-country road trip from Washington, D.C., to Seattle. We got lost in what seemed like the middle of nowhere trying to track down Minidoka’s entrance. My brother Roland was 7 years old.

We learned that our Dad and his family were sent to Minidoka from Seattle in 1942. His brother, Ban, joined the 442nd and died fighting in the Vosges mountains of France. Dad’s incarceration experience came to us gradually and haltingly and had a deep impact on Roland. It spawned a lifelong interest in Japan and our family’s history, and likely led to his career in law. He always had a strong sense of right and wrong and, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, was intimately aware that discrimination and oppression knew many forms.

Through the years, Roland loved learning that Minidoka was not simply fading into history, but just the contrary – it was growing its physical presence and educational outreach to ensure the lessons continue to be told. Minidoka was so important to him that Roland made a posthumous gift to Friends of Minidoka to keep those efforts alive today and into the future.

Please consider Friends of Minidoka in your estate plans and leave an enduring legacy like my brother.
