$3 million for WWII Japanese American Confinement Sites The National Park Service (NPS) has awarded 23 grants totaling $2.9 million to help preserve and interpret historic sites where Japanese Americans were detained during World War II. The NPS granted $17,295 to re-establish the historic Honor Roll (which commemorates Japanese American servicemen) at the Minidoka National Historic Site in Jerome County, ID. Read More [PDF]... |

2010 Civil Liberties Symposium The National Park Service, the Friends of Minidoka, and the College of Southern Idaho will present the fifth annual symposium on civil liberties and constitutional rights. This year’s event will explore the role that art plays in periods of conflict over civil liberties and will utilize several perspectives, including the long and continuing struggle for civil rights. Japanese Americans in camps like Minidoka used art in various ways to cope with their incarceration and to make statements about that experience and this will be a focus of the conference. 2010 Pilgrimage to Minidoka Former internees, their families, friends, and those interested in this historic event will make a pilgrimage from Seattle and Portland to the former Minidoka Internment Camp from June 24-27, 2010. On Saturday, there will be guided tours of what remains of the former site. On Sunday, a memorial service will be held at the site to honor internees and those who left Minidoka and were killed while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. New Signage Exhibits at the Site Wayside exhibits interpreting the history, people, conditions, injustice, and community of Minidoka have been finalized with the NPS’ Harpers Ferry Interpretive Design Center and are being fabricated. We are pushing for delivery in time for this year’s Pilgrimage. |
